    St. George Marathon

We admit it!  October is a veritable beehive of activity in St. George, UT.  As a community, we’ve survived our 156th triple-digit summer (only the last 35 or so with the wondrous blessing of air conditioning) and are enjoying cooler temperatures and a huge influx of visitors for our world class and extremely popular events, including the St. George Marathon and the Huntsman World Senior Games.

This year’s 39th annual St. George Marathon, the nation’s 13th largest such sporting event held this year on Saturday, October 7, always kicks off the fall season on the first weekend of October.  The St. George Marathon has been designated by Runner’s World magazine’s as one of the 10 Most Scenic Marathons, Top Ten Fastest Marathons and is among the Top 20 Marathons in the USA.  The St. George Marathon is also called one of four “marathons to build a vacation around.” Based on surveys from participants, Runner’s World magazine also named the St. George Marathon, the Most Organized Marathon, in part due to its tremendous volunteer support.

What began in 1977 with 57 runners and one wheelchair participant now accommodates up to 7,400 runners – men and women from around the state, the nation and the world – selected by random lottery from among the many thousands who register to run the race within the six hour limit.

This exceptional event, hosted by the City of St. George, begins in the beautiful Pine Valley mountains at an altitude of 5,240 feet, then drops nearly 2600 feet as you run along State Highway 18 through spectacular scenic southwest Utah, ending at Vernon Worthen Park (at an altitude of 2680 feet) in the center of St. George.  What makes this USA Track and Field Certified and Sanctioned races one of the 10 Most Scenic Marathons?  Must be our crystal clear blue skies, our beautiful red desert landscape and the chance to run past the majestic Snow Canyon State Park with its picturesque formations of spectacular white, pink, and red sandstone and black basalt, a favorite backdrop in more than a few major motion pictures, YouTube videos and TV commercials.
There’s no question how the St. George Marathon earned its stellar reputation.  It’s the same way we’ve earned ours … hard work, friendly service and great views.  Register online today for your comfortable, affordable vacation home-away-from-home at for accommodations at the St. George Resort Rentals or for Five Seasons Vacation condominiums.
