Kudos for the 39-year old St. George Marathon, held annually on the first Saturday in October (this year held on October 1), include Runner’s World magazine’s designation among the 10 Most Scenic Marathons, Fastest Marathons and the Top 20 Marathons in the USA. The St. George Marathon is also called one of four “marathons to build a vacation around.” Based on surveys of runners, Runner’s World magazine also named the St. George Marathon, the Most Organized Marathon, in part due to its tremendous volunteer support.
The 13th largest marathon in the United States accommodates up to 7,400 runners – men and women from around the state, the nation and the world – selected by random lottery from among the many thousands who register to run the race within the six hour limit.
The St. George Marathon, hosted by the City of St. George, begins in the beautiful Pine Valley mountains at an altitude of 5,240 feet, then drops nearly 2600 feet as you run along State Highway 18 through spectacular scenic southwest Utah, ending at Vernon Worthen Park (at an altitude of 2680 feet) in the center of St. George. What makes this USA Track and Field Certified and Sanctioned races one of the 10 Most Scenic Marathons is certainly running past the majestic Snow Canyon State Park with its picturesque formations of spectacular white, pink, and red sandstone and black basalt, a favorite backdrop in a few major motion pictures and TV commercials.
