Kite flying brings families together, welcomes spring, and, in the case of the 17th Annual Dixie Power Kite Festival, held again this year at SunRiver in St. George, gives children an exciting reward for their efforts to develop reading as a habit for learning and fun.
Held this year on Saturday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at SunRiver St. George, the Kite Festival has a long history as a family-oriented event with a goal of having “everyone participate regardless of experience, training, financial means or physical ability.” Toward that goal – and a secondary goal of “promoting reading as a fundamental basis of education for every elementary age child” – the Dixie Power Kite Festival will provide a high-quality kite or age appropriate book to children who qualify through their reading efforts. If you have your own favorite kite, there will be plenty of blue sky in which to fly it!
This family-friendly one-day event has no fees for parking, admission, entertainment or fireworks – and there is no cost to ride the shuttle. In addition to kite flying, other activities include free games and fees of $1-$2 for such goings-on as bouncy toys, small trains and other rides. And, there will also be plenty of reasonably-priced but yummy food available from an assortment of local vendors.
One of many highlights throughout a day of continuous entertainment will be performances by the recent winners of “Dixie’s Got Talent” from 6 – 7 p.m.
