The history of St. George Musical Theater, is one filled with great successes and outstanding productions, but has also had more than its share of challenges and disappointments. However, lovers of community theater were determined to overcome incredible odds and to rise above the company’s challenges. After St. George Musical Theater founder playwright Mark Ogden passed away in 1994, Don and Dawna Kenworthy guided the small organization from a fledgling company of passionate thespians to the most successful community theater in southern Utah. By 2007 SGMT was producing 8 shows annually with over 50,000 enthusiastic patrons passing through its doors each year.

When St. George Musical Theater lost its downtown venue leaving it without the ability to perform signature in-the-round productions, it was forced to close its operations. It was five long years including a series of fits and starts without any means to generate revenue, St. George Musical Theater was given new life when former St. George City Mayor Dan McArthur, current Mayor Jon Pike, the St. George City Council and other supportive city officials allowed St. George Musical Theater to open its doors once more – this time in the historic St. George Opera House – its home in the beginning.

Now in their second season in their new location, St. George Musical Theater has another ambitious season, which includes these old favorites and some newer offerings:

  • Into The Woods   (August 18 – September 17)
  • Heaven Can Wait    (October 6 – November 5)
  • Annie  (January 19 – February 18)
  • Over the River and Through the Woods  (March 9 – April 8)
  • Brigadoon   (April 27 – May 27)

Peter Pan at Tuacahn

Children of all ages have delighted to the antics of Peter Pan, that mischievous young boy who can fly and who never grows up.  Based on the character created by Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Broadway’s version of this timeless and Tony award winning classic musical, performed at Tuacahn on alternating nights from May 27 to October 14, will whisk you away to a place where dreams are born and no one ever grows up!  With faith, trust and a little bit of pixie dust the Tuacahn Amphitheatre is enchantingly transformed into Neverland where lost boys fly and magic happens every summer night!

Tuacahn’s adaptation of the show, which has delighted audiences of all ages for more than 60 years, will take you soaring with the iconic songs “I’m Flying,” “I’ve Gotta Crow,” “I Won’t Grow Up,” and “Never Never Land,” along with rousing magic, warmth, and adventure!  Peter Pan is the perfect show for the child in all of us who dreamed of flying and never growing up.

Beach Boys

Who in the “over 60” crowd doesn’t remember listening to Beach Boy tunes in “the little deuce coupe” and having “fun, fun, fun til Daddy took the T-bird away?”  Who didn’t know “California Girls” named  “Barbara Ann,” Lynda or (“Help Me) Rhonda?”  “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” if you could re-experience your best girl (or guy) “Put(ting) Your Head on My Shoulder” “In the Still of the Night” or relive those days of “Good Vibrations” and “California Dreamin’” when the “Surf’s Up” on a beautiful summer day at the beach?

The Beach Boys had a long string of hit records and sold tens of millions of albums in a lengthy career which changed the musical landscape so profoundly every boy band in the last 50 years has sought to equal.

Happily for us all, the world-famous Beach Boys continue to create and perform with the same bold imagination and style which took their stripped shirts and amazing harmony to the top of the charts … and you can enjoy their “Sounds of Summer” at Tuacahn Center for the Performing Arts in two encore performances on Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29.  If “… You Wanna Dance” here’s your chance, but, they will sell out quickly, so don’t wait until “I Get Around” to sign up for tickets at tuacahn.org.

The Beach Boys will be rocking the canyon on the last weekend in April, so if reliving your teen years is on your list of “things to see and do” in southern Utah, now’s the time to reserve a beautiful, comfortable and affordable vacation home-away-from-home.  Register online for a week or a month at St. George Resort Rentals at stgeorgeresortrentals.com  or  laspalmasresortcondos.com for Five Seasons Vacation condominiums.   We look forward to seeing you.

Celebrity Concert Series

The mission of the Celebrity Concert Series is “to provide culturally uplifting art experiences which can normally only be found in larger metropolitan areas. “  Since 1972, board members have readily admitted to taking an occasional risk on new artists, but all musical art forms are considered for this premiere and well-respected performance community program.

Variety in programming includes everything from Dixieland jazz, string quartets, ballet and ballroom dance companies, and choir performances as well as guitar, clarinet, harp and percussion soloists.  New Age musicians Montreaux, concert pianist Christopher O’Riley and prima ballerina Galina Mezentseva of the St. Petersburg Ballet Company are three amazing musicians who have performed in the Series.  No two years are alike, but the cost for season tickets – on sale now – is surprisingly affordable, considering the value of the performances, generally always at the Cox Center for the Performing Arts on the Dixie State University campus in St. George.

Speaking of, the mission of 5 Seasons Vacation Resort and St. George Resort Rentals is to provide you and your family with a beautiful, comfortable and affordable home-away-from-home, whether you are here in St. George for a week or a month.  Register online today at stgeorgeresortrentals.com for accommodations at the St. George Resort Rentals or laspalmasresortcondos.com for Five Seasons Vacation condominiums.

Throughout is 21-year history, the 100+member Southern Utah Heritage Choir, has maintained a reputation as an exceptional singing group and a following extending far beyond the borders of the St. George community.  The origin of this incredible choir dates back to 1994, when organizers invited 200 volunteer vocalists from the local community and united them for a single event during the holiday season.  In a word, it was wonderful!  The audience and the musicians were delighted … so delighted, in fact, choir members asked for another change to perform together – and so was born the Southern Utah Heritage Choir.

Members of the Choir are volunteers from the community, representing many walks of life.  They pay their own choir expenses, and give freely of their time for rehearsals and performances.  The Choir performs a wide variety of music to accomplish its mission – that of “bringing people closer to the Savior through beautiful music” at Christmas and Easter concerts, spring and fall programs, patriotic events and many musical devotionals in the historic St. George Tabernacle as well as other larger concert venues.

The Choir – a treasure in the St. George community – has been invited several times to be the voice of the Mormon Battalion in the Salt Lake Tabernacle, and has, in the two decades of its existence, toured throughout the world, performing concerts in the Czech Republic, Armenia, Mexico, England, Scotland, China and, most recently, Ireland.

When you travel to Southern Utah, you’ll want to know hear the Choir, then return to a beautiful home-away-from-home vacation resort rental.  Whether you are here for a week or a month, we will be waiting to make you comfortable at the 5 Seasons Vacation condominiums and St. George Resort Rentals.  Register online today at stgeorgeresortrentals.com for accommodations at the St. George Resort Rentals or laspalmasresortcondos.com for Five Seasons Vacation condominiums.

Enjoy a New York style Broadway performance right in the heart of the deserts of Southern Utah when you visit Tuacahn Amphitheater located in St. George. For the 2013 season, Tuachan presents a number of family friendly Broadway musicals which include “MaryPoppins.” Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Starlight Express,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie,”“Mulan the musical,” and “Elf the musical.” Audiences can also enjoy a pre-show performance and dinner which is served on the outdoor plaza. Pre-show dinner menus are themed to each show.

“Mary Poppins” is a childhood favorite of many and this modern day performance features the original lyrics and music from the 1930’s film, but this time with a modern twist with added lyrics and music by Anthony Drewe and George Stiles. Prepare yourself to experience a supercalifragilistic time at “Mary Poppins,” the Broadway musical.

“Starlight Express” is a rock musical that tells the story of the dream of a child where his train set suddenly springs to life to a magnificent race. The roller skate wearing actors and upbeat rock lyrics make this musical among one of the longest running.

The Tony Award winning musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie” hits the stage for a 1920’s themed musical performance that will have everyone on their feet doing the Charleston. Audiences go on an adventure with a young, and at times naïve, Millie, who ends up in the middle of a series of adventures as she pursues marrying her very wealthy boss. This show is appropriate for children of all ages as well as adults.

Based on the film “Elf,” the Broadway performance of “Elf the musical” tells the tale of an elf named Buddy who makes his way to New York City to find his father, and ends up finding much more. With the addition of original musical compositions paired with the characters and plot we know and love from the original film, this musical is both entraining and heartfelt. Celebrate Christmas in July with Buddy the Elf in this modern musical rendition.

Experience the stories and traditions of ancient China with “Mulan the musical.” Based on the popular Disney movie, “Mulan,” this musical keeps the original plot and characters, as well some original scores that include “Reflection,” “I’ll Make a Man Out of You,” and “Honor to Us All,” in addition to original compositions. “Mulan the musical” runs 75 minutes and is great for children and adults of all ages.

If you prefer concerts over musicals, Tuachan Amphitheater also boasts an impressive lineup for their 2013 concert schedule. Beyond the shows and concerts, Tuachan also holds the Tuacahn Saturday Market. From 9am to 1pm, where visitors can enjoy a pancake breakfast, experience the unique scenery, check out local artists and painters, or pack a picnic to enjoy on the lawn.
