What began in 1985 with $1000 in seed money – but in its first year raised $11,000 thanks to the support of the community – grew to become the largest holiday fundraiser between Provo, UT and Las Vegas, NV. In its 30 year history, the Jubilee of Trees has raised millions in support of programs and services at the 245-bed Dixie Regional Medical Center through the sale of exquisitely decorated Christmas trees, wreaths, gingerbread houses, baked goods and handmade items. The Jubilee – this year held from Wednesday, November 18 through Monday, November 23 – includes a live concert, a Teddy Bear picnic for the kids, a fashion show, a gala dinner and auction, breathtakingly beautiful holiday decor created by amazingly talented craftsmen (and women) and ongoing entertainment throughout the event.
The Jubilee of Trees opens with the Bar J Wrangler’s Bells and Boots concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Official tree viewing takes place Thursday through Monday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, except Friday when the doors close to the public at 4 p.m. in preparation for the gala dinner and auction. Tickets for the Jubilee of Trees are $5 for adults, $1 for children 15 and younger. Individual concert and special event prices vary. Visit DixieRegional.org/JubileeofTrees for more information.

The Water Walk, in downtown St. George, meanders for about 6,000 feet from the nature park at Brooks Pond just off Skyline Drive, down Main Street until it reaches the Town Square.
In the early days of St. George, Brooks Pond was a watering hole where area children could play in the water to cool off on those sizzling hot summer days before air-conditioning. Lifetime residents of Utah’s Dixie remember the water running down both sides of Main Street, providing a steady source of irrigation for those living downhill in the middle of town, but also as a place where they, as little children, could float leaves or race handmade paper boats.
The water at Brooks Pond is off limits to kids of all ages, and has been for many years, but even if you can’t get wet, it is still an interesting destination. The downhill stroll is also worth an hour or two of your time as it takes you past numerous pioneer homes, including famed author Juanita Brooks, who wrote the then-controversial “Mountain Meadow Massacre” and other acclaimed writings about the American West and early Mormon history. Along your walk from Brooks Pond to Town Square you will also find many interesting historic sites, including the St. George Opera House and St. George Social Hall.
No need to find a mud hole to cool off during your summertime visit in St. George. Simply set the thermostat where you want it in your comfortable, air-conditioned vacation home-away-from-home. When optometrist Dr. Sheldon Johnson decided to level some property on his farmland in St. George, he had no idea his seemingly inconsequential task would change his life from that day forward while creating a new attraction which would bring thousands of dinosaur-loving tourists and curious visitors to his hometown. A thick block of sandstone he found under sedimentary rock revealed an unexpected surprise to the landowner – a large dinosaur track preserved in 3-dimension. But the surprises didn’t stop there. In the 15 years since this discovery was made, thousands more tracks, fossilized bones and fish, shells of small aquatic animals, leaves and seeds of plants have been unearthed and identified from 200 million year-old sandstone and mudstone along the shores of an ancient lake, now near downtown St. George, UT.
Dr. Johnson and his wife, LaVerna worked with Utah State Paleontologist Dr. Jim Kirkland and other scientists, local businesses and elected officials to decide how this find would be preserved and protected in a creative learning environment. The answer is the Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm, a beautiful museum built directly over the original find.
In addition to the tracks clearly on display everywhere you look, museum staff have created interesting videos and displays to explain the site to young and old alike. Displays from other dino-sites come and go, as well often providing a different perspective on dino-life in the world’s Jurassic era.
The Dinosaur Discovery site is open at 2180 East Riverside Drive every Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the summer months (March 1 – September 30) including all summer holidays. From October 1 to February 28, the museum is open from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed on Sundays as well as winter holidays.
Tickets are $6 for Adults, $3 for children ages 4-11, and those under age 4 are free. There are also discounted Group rates (10 or more).
