A large percentage of Washington County residents will be volunteering (along with friends and family members) in one way or another during the month of October, as Tuacahn’s summer season comes to an end. The St. George Marathon kicks things off, with an anticipated 7,500 runners .
Immediately on the heels of the nation’s 13th largest marathon comes the Annual Huntsman World Senior Games. With nearly 11,000 senior athletes, ages 50 or better, from a dozen or more different countries. Games’ participants come to Southern Utah to play volleyball, softball, golf, tennis, basketball, table tennis, horseshoes, bridge, badminton, pickleball, shuffleboard, or racquetball. Some will participate in Cowboy action shooting, archery, bowling, cycling, running, or swimming. In total, there are 27 sports categories from which to choose.
The Games will also offer a variety of free health screenings for athletes and their official fans. Games participants and the entire St. George community are invited to attend two exceptional events.
The Opening Ceremonies is held outdoors (weather permitting … and it usually does) at Dixie State University’s Legend Solar Stadium. This exciting event will include an Olympic-style Parade of Athletes, a traditional lighting of the caldron, and amazing talent on the field, as well as world famous speakers. The ceremonies are free-of-charge.
Throughout the Games – the world’s largest sporting event – there will be opportunities to mingle with like-minded athletes at sports socials. Don’t miss the fun and excitement!
