Utah and sports came together in the minds of the world’s citizens when Salt Lake City hosted the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, but here in southwestern Utah we have long enjoyed such a well-orchestrated and eagerly anticipated sporting event – though on a much smaller scale – known as the Utah Summer Games.
Held annually in Cedar City – a pleasant and scenic 50-mile drive north on the I-15 freeway, amateur athletes who have qualified in regional competitions gather to compete in more than 40 sporting events, including bowling, archery, volleyball, cycling, basketball for youth and adults, pickeball, girls gymnastics, water polo, horseshoes, karate, racquetball, shooting, tennis, wresting, weight lifting, bass fishing and dozens more.
This two-week event, in play from June 5 to 28, 2015, draws thousands of experts and novices, toddlers and seasoned citizens, as well as their family members and friends to Iron County’s largest community to enjoy the thrill of completion in Utah’s largest and oldest sport festival, complete with outstanding sporting venues but impressive Olympic-style opening and closing ceremonies.
