11,000 of Our Closest Friends Coming to St George

A large percentage of Washington County residents will be volunteering in one way or another during the month of October as Tuacahn’s summer season comes to an end even as the world comes to our door to participate, first in the St. George Marathon, now in its 39th year with an anticipated 7,500 runners along with friends and family members.

Immediately on the heels of the nation’s 13th largest marathon comes the 31st Annual Huntsman World Senior Games with nearly 11,000 senior athletes, ages 50 or better from a dozen or more different countries.  Games’ participants come to Southern Utah to play volleyball, softball, golf, tennis, basketball, table tennis, horseshoes, bridge, badminton, archery, pickleball, shuffleboard, racquetball, cowboy action shooting or to bowl, cycle, run or swim.  In total, there are 27 sports categories from which to choose.

During the two glorious weeks of October 9 – 21, the Games will also offer a variety of free health screenings for athletes and their official fans.   Games participants and the entire St. George community are invited to attend two exceptional events.  The Opening Ceremonies, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10 is held outdoors (weather permitting … and it usually does) at Dixie State University’s Legend Solar Stadium.  This exciting event will include an Olympic-style Parade of Athletes, a traditional lighting of the caldron and amazing talent on the field, as well as world famous speakers.

On the following Tuesday, October 17 … this time indoors at DSU’s Burns Arena – there will be a “Rat Pack” Tribute Concert – another chance for athletes, their friends and family and the St. George area community to come together for a lively celebration.  Both events are free-of-charge.

Throughout the Games – the world’s largest sporting event – there will opportunities to mingle with like-minded athletes at sports socials.  The popular Global Cup World Senior Volleyball Championship with two international teams facing off during this 4-day tournament (October ??-??) will be held at Desert Hills High School.  Don’t miss the fun and excitement!
