On Saturday, April 22, the clear blue sky over the Encampment Mall at Dixie State University, will once again be dotted with colorful kites taking sail. The 18th Annual Kite Festival began as an effort to promote reading as a habit and to encourage students and their family members to leave their screens at home and go out and play together. Remember, the lilting and memorable “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” from Disney’s “Mary Poppins?” Yep, it’s like that!
Qualifying students earn their choice of a really nice kite or an age-appropriate book for reading a designated number of hours or books … and the Washington County School District also receives contributions for distribution to schools with the most number of children participating in this wholesome, fun and family-oriented event. The Kite Festival is open to anyone who wants to or who has ever flown a kite, regardless of experience or physical abilities. The event is free for parking with free admission, free entertainment, free fireworks, free children’s games and only a nominal fee for some children’s activities including bounce houses and other rides. Wanna bring your own kite? That’s an option, too!
Oh, and come hungry because there is plenty of tasty and reasonably priced food available.
There’s lots to see and do at the Kite Festival and other springtime events here in Southern Utah. For more information about the Dixie Power Kite Festival, see www.dixiepowerkitefestival.com.
