The history of St. George Musical Theater, is one filled with great successes and outstanding productions, but has also had more than its share of challenges and disappointments. However, lovers of community theater were determined to overcome incredible odds and to rise above the company’s challenges. After St. George Musical Theater founder playwright Mark Ogden passed away in 1994, Don and Dawna Kenworthy guided the small organization from a fledgling company of passionate thespians to the most successful community theater in southern Utah. By 2007 SGMT was producing 8 shows annually with over 50,000 enthusiastic patrons passing through its doors each year.
When St. George Musical Theater lost its downtown venue leaving it without the ability to perform signature in-the-round productions, it was forced to close its operations. It was five long years including a series of fits and starts without any means to generate revenue, St. George Musical Theater was given new life when former St. George City Mayor Dan McArthur, current Mayor Jon Pike, the St. George City Council and other supportive city officials allowed St. George Musical Theater to open its doors once more – this time in the historic St. George Opera House – its home in the beginning.
Now in their second season in their new location, St. George Musical Theater has another ambitious season, which includes these old favorites and some newer offerings:
- Into The Woods (August 18 – September 17)
- Heaven Can Wait (October 6 – November 5)
- Annie (January 19 – February 18)
- Over the River and Through the Woods (March 9 – April 8)
- Brigadoon (April 27 – May 27)
